Bushnell rangefinder not working? On every current Bushnell laser the first fix is the same: fit a fresh CR2 3-volt lithium battery flat (negative) end first, then press and hold the Fire button for 10 seconds. If it powers on but is not reading or not showing yardage, hold Power/Fire down while you aim, keep fingers clear of the front lenses, range something at least 5 yards away and press again, because on the Tour V5, V6, Pro XE and Pro X3 the laser only fires for up to 5 seconds per press.

This page covers the whole Bushnell range: Tour V5 and V5 Shift, Tour V6 and V6 Shift, Pro XE, Pro X3 and Pro X3+, and the Hybrid laser/GPS. Each symptom below points to the model-specific step, and every button sequence comes from Bushnell's own support pages and user manuals (listed at the end). Own a Tour V4? It has its own button logic and a separate guide: Bushnell Tour V4 not working.

Key facts

  • Battery: every Bushnell laser covered here takes one CR2 3V lithium, inserted negative (flat) end first. Bushnell recommends Panasonic, Duracell or Energizer and replacing it at least every six months.
  • Brand-new unit dead? Bushnell ships the CR2 pre-installed with a plastic protective disc on top. Remove it.
  • Reset: after fitting a new battery, hold Fire for 10 seconds. Bushnell documents no other reset for its lasers.
  • A blinking battery icon means the unit will not operate until the battery is replaced (Tour V5, V6, Pro XE and Pro X3 manuals).
  • Warranty: laser rangefinders carry a 2-year limited warranty; start with Bushnell's online warranty form.

Quick answer. New CR2, flat end first, protective disc removed, cap snug. Hold Fire 10 seconds. Press Power/Fire once and focus the eyepiece. Aim at a target at least 5 yards away and hold the button until a number appears; press again if it times out. Distance about 10% short? You are in meters. Still nothing on a fresh battery? Go to warranty and repair.

Bushnell rangefinder won't turn on

Bushnell lists three battery signs on every laser support page: the unit won't turn on, the display doesn't illuminate, or the display goes blank when the laser fires. Work through these in order:

  1. Brand-new unit? Remove the protective disc. The Tour V5, Tour V6, Pro XE and Pro X3 manuals all say a CR2 is pre-installed with a plastic disc on top of it. Lift the battery door tab, turn the door counterclockwise, take the disc out and refit the door.
  2. Fit a fresh CR2 3-volt lithium cell, negative (flat) end first, with the positive end facing the cover. A CR123A is the same voltage but a different size; see CR2 vs CR123A.
  3. Close the door until snug. A loose cap breaks contact.
  4. Hold Fire for 10 seconds. Bushnell adds this step after every battery change on the Tour V5, V6, Pro XE, Pro X3 and Pro X3+.
  5. Press Power/Fire once and rotate the eyepiece until the display icons are sharp.

If the battery icon is blinking, the manuals are clear: the battery needs replacing and the unit will not operate. Bushnell says a first battery should last a few months, suggests carrying one or two spares and recommends Panasonic, Duracell or Energizer. Cell-by-model details are on Bushnell rangefinder battery by model, and the battery for other brands is in the rangefinder battery finder.

Bushnell rangefinder not reading or not showing yardage

If the display lights but no distance appears, Bushnell's manuals give the same four checks under "target range cannot be obtained": make sure the display is lit, make sure Power/Fire is pressed, make sure nothing such as a hand or finger is blocking the objective lenses, and hold the unit steady while pressing. In practice:

  • Hold the button through the scan. Keep Power/Fire pressed while you aim and let go when the number appears.
  • Press again after 5 seconds. On the Tour V5, Tour V6, Pro XE and Pro X3 the laser transmits for a maximum of 5 seconds per press. If you are still searching for the flag when it stops, it is not broken: press again.
  • Range something at least 5 yards away. All the manuals give 5 yards as the minimum.
  • Keep the front lenses clear. A finger, glove, strap or case flap over the objective lens blocks the return.
  • Brace it. A shaky aim slides off the flag onto the trees behind. Tuck your elbows or rest against the cart; the full method is in how to use a golf rangefinder.
  • Clean the lenses. Blow off dust, then wipe in circles with the microfiber cloth. For a deeper clean Bushnell suggests lens tissue with lens fluid or isopropyl alcohol, applied to the cloth, never directly to the lens.
  • Check the battery icon. A weak cell can light the display and then cut out when the laser fires.

You do not need to clear the last reading before ranging a new target; the display simply holds the last distance for 10 seconds and then switches off. Heavy rain matters too: Bushnell rates the Tour V5 and V6 as water resistant but says they should not be exposed to heavy rain or direct streams of water, and water damage is not covered.

Reading the wrong number, or about 10% short

Bushnell's own FAQ for "off by 10 yards" points to the units indicator in the lower right of the LCD: a distance that looks too short is usually in meters. Use the unit steps in the model table above; every model returns to the last unit used when it powers on. If the number differs from a playing partner's, check slope: Shift models and the Pro XE/X3 show a compensated "play as" distance below the line-of-sight distance when slope is on. On the Pro X3 and X3+ Bushnell also says to turn Elements off before comparing with another rangefinder. Step-by-step unit changes for every brand are in how to change a rangefinder from meters to yards.

Bushnell JOLT not working (Pro XE, Pro X3, X3+)

JOLT is Bushnell's confirmation that the laser picked the closer of two objects, normally the flag in front of the trees. According to the Pro XE manual you get two short vibration bursts and the red Visual JOLT ring only when the laser detects more than one object; if it sees just one, the distance displays with no JOLT. Bushnell's Pro X3 and X3+ FAQs say the same: no JOLT means more than one object was not acquired, so keep pressing Power/Fire and sweep onto the pin. For the Pro XE, Bushnell adds that its precise locking means it JOLTs less often than older models, and that flags with prisms or reflectors can lock so quickly they rarely JOLT. To confirm you are on the flag, hold Fire and pan slowly away from it.

If you want to check the vibration motor itself, the Pro XE and Tour V6 manuals say opening the settings menu triggers a JOLT preview without firing the laser.

Bushnell slope not working

On the Shift models, the Pro XE and the Pro X3, slope is a physical switch, so a missing slope reading is almost always the switch position:

  • Tour V5 Shift (201911): slide the switch left so the red Slope indicator shows; right turns slope off.
  • Tour V6 Shift (202321): slide left for slope on (orange indicator visible); right for off.
  • Pro XE (201950): slide left so the red indicator is visible; right turns it off.
  • Pro X3 (202250): the switch locks. Pull down the side latch with your right thumb, pull the switch back to turn slope on or slide it forward to turn it off, then release the latch. If the switch will not move, pull the latch down first.
  • Tour V5 and Tour V6 (non-Shift): no slope function, so there is nothing to turn on.

With slope on, the grade and the compensated distance appear in a second row after you release the button; the Tour V5 and V6 manuals use the example of 160 yards at +6% showing 168. Slope must be off for competition; where the switch sits on every model is on how to turn off slope.

Model notes

Tour V4 and V4 Shift

The V4 range has no Mode or Y/M button: units are set by holding Power/Fire from off, which is why owners report it "stuck in setup mode". It also has three versions with different slope controls. All of that is covered in Bushnell Tour V4 not working.

Tour V5 and V5 Shift

Units use the Y/M button on the side: turn the unit on and hold Y/M until the units change. The V5 is water resistant, not submersible. Bushnell sells a replacement battery cap for the Tour V5, V6 and V7 if yours is lost. Full model guide: Bushnell Tour V5 and V5 Shift.

Tour V6 and V6 Shift

The V6 manual sets units through Mode (hold until the display blinks, tap to toggle, Fire to confirm), while Bushnell's V6 FAQ mentions a side Y/M button; use whichever your unit has. The V6 Shift switch shows an orange indicator when slope is on. More on the two versions: Tour V6 vs V6 Shift.

Pro XE

The Pro XE's settings menu (hold Mode) holds units and four brightness levels; with slope on, tapping Mode toggles Elements, which adds temperature and air pressure to the slope distance. It is IPX7 rated. Guide: Bushnell Pro XE.

Pro X3 and Pro X3+

The X3 has a dual display: the button on the left side switches between black and red. On the red display the first setting in the Mode menu is brightness and the second is units, which explains many "can't change to yards" reports. App problems are usually pairing: Bushnell says to remove the rangefinder from your phone's Bluetooth settings, toggle Bluetooth off and on, then pair from the app. Guide: Bushnell Pro X3.

Hybrid (laser + GPS)

The laser side runs on a replaceable CR2. The GPS side uses an internal rechargeable lithium battery that cannot be changed, and Bushnell warns that opening the device voids the warranty; for a suspected GPS battery fault, contact Bushnell. If the Hybrid shows an error code and finds no courses, Bushnell says the operating system has been corrupted, usually by unplugging it from a computer without ejecting it. The fix is a software reload: format the device's USB drive, download the hybrid2.stp file Bushnell links on its Hybrid support page (the name must be exactly hybrid2.stp), log in at bushnell.igolf.com and run the firmware update (up to 45 minutes), eject safely, then test outdoors. The Hybrid is IPX4 rated and should not be submerged.

How to reset a Bushnell rangefinder

Bushnell documents one reset for its laser rangefinders: install a fresh battery and press and hold the Fire button for 10 seconds. There is no reset pinhole in Bushnell's support material. You may see advice elsewhere to hold the button for 30 seconds with the battery out; Bushnell does not describe that step. After a reset, check units and slope, because the unit powers up in the last mode used. The only other reset-like procedure Bushnell publishes is the Hybrid GPS software reload above.

Bushnell rangefinder error codes

Bushnell's laser manuals and support FAQs for the Tour V5, Tour V6, Pro XE and Pro X3 list no error codes: faults are described by symptom only. The single exception is the Hybrid's GPS "error code", which Bushnell does not name and fixes with the software reload. If your laser shows a code or message not described here, do not guess at button combinations: note it, try a fresh battery and the 10-second reset, then quote it on the warranty form.

Still not working? Warranty, repair or replacement

Bushnell laser rangefinders carry a two-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship; without a receipt Bushnell dates it from the manufacture code in the serial number, and water damage, misuse and unauthorized repairs are not covered. The warranty and repairs page sets the order: troubleshoot with the manual, submit the warranty evaluation form, wait for a ticket number by email (24–48 hours), then ship the unit with that ticket. Bushnell decides whether it is serviced or replaced. Solar-burn dots that appear within two years are handled through the Contact Us form. Before sending an out-of-warranty unit to the repair lab, Bushnell's support hub asks you to contact customersupport@bushnell.com or call 1-800-423-3537. The full claim walkthrough is in our Bushnell rangefinder repair and warranty guide.

Lost caps and cases are cheap parts rather than repairs: Bushnell sells replacement battery caps (one for the Tour V5/V6/V7, one for the Pro X3 and Tour V6 Shift), and fitting cases are listed in Bushnell rangefinder cases by model. If a unit still will not range on a fresh battery and the repair quote does not make sense, compare a checked used unit using our used golf rangefinder buying guide; general fixes for other brands are on rangefinder not working.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Bushnell rangefinder not working?

Most often the CR2 battery: flat, low quality, inserted the wrong way round or, on a new unit, still covered by its plastic protective disc. Fit a fresh CR2 flat end first, hold Fire for 10 seconds and press Power/Fire once.

Why is my Bushnell rangefinder not reading or showing yardage?

Hold Power/Fire while aiming and press again if the 5-second laser window runs out, keep fingers off the front lenses, range something at least 5 yards away and hold the unit steady. A weak battery can light the display but cut out when the laser fires.

How do I reset my Bushnell rangefinder?

Install a fresh CR2 3-volt lithium battery, negative end first, then press and hold the Fire button for 10 seconds. That is the only reset Bushnell documents for its laser rangefinders.

Why won't my Bushnell rangefinder turn on?

Bushnell lists a dead battery as the cause when the unit won't turn on, the display stays dark or blanks when firing. A blinking battery icon also means the unit will not operate until the CR2 is replaced.

How do I change my Bushnell rangefinder back to yards?

Tour V5: hold the Y/M button. Tour V6, Pro XE and Pro X3: hold Mode to open settings, tap Mode to toggle Y and M, press Fire to confirm. Hybrid and Tour V4: from off, hold Power/Fire about 7 seconds and release on Y.

Why is my Bushnell Pro XE or Pro X3 not giving a JOLT?

JOLT only fires when the laser detects more than one object and picks the closer one. Keep pressing Power/Fire and sweep onto the pin, or pan slowly off the flag. Flags with reflectors can lock so fast that the Pro XE rarely JOLTs.
