Buying a Bushnell is not really a price decision — it is three mechanical questions. Tour line or Pro line? Shift or not, because a plain Tour V4 or V6 has no slope at all and you cannot add it later? And does the slope switch lock, which only the Pro X3 line does? The short version
Play competitions: A Shift model. The visible switch is what lets you show a referee the device cannot measure elevation.
Switch drifts in the bag: Pro X3 or X3+ — the only Bushnell whose slope switch locks.
Mountain or big temperature swings: Pro XE. It folds temperature and barometric pressure into the number, not just elevation.
Flat course, weekend golf: A Tour model. The Pro premium buys sealing and optics you will not miss on a parkland course.
Buying used: Check it is a Shift. A plain V4 or V6 at a Shift price is the most common mistake on the second-hand market.
The three questions that actually decide it
1. Tour or Pro?
The Tour line is the mainstream one — the V-numbered models, currently up to the V7 Shift. The Pro line is the premium one: metal bodies, 7x optics instead of 6x, IPX7 sealing, and the extra compensation features. The gap between them is real but narrow on a flat course in good light. It widens in rain, at dusk, and in year three when something has to survive a knock.
Two models sit outside both lines. The A1 Slope is a compact budget unit where slope is a mode on the Mode button rather than a switch — which matters in competition, as below. The Phantom is a GPS handheld, not a laser at all; it has no laser slope and charges over a cable rather than taking a cell.
2. Shift or not — and this is where the money gets lost
“Shift” is Bushnell’s name for the slope mechanism, and it is a different product, not a setting. A plain Tour V4, V5 or V6 has no Slope-Switch and no slope function; you cannot enable it later with a firmware update or a menu. If a listing does not say Shift, assume it does not have slope.
3. Does the switch lock?
On most Bushnell models the Slope-Switch is a plain slider: a coloured indicator shows when slope is on, hidden means it is off and the unit reports true distance. On the Pro X3 and X3+ the switch has a catch — you release the lock, then slide. That solves one specific irritation: arriving at the first tee to find slope switched itself on in transit.
On the A1 Slope there is no switch at all. Slope is toggled with the Mode button, so there is no external indicator a rules official can see. It still measures true distance with slope off — but you cannot demonstrate it at a glance. Which one, for your situation
You play club competitions
Buy a Shift model and nothing else. The visible slider settles the question before it becomes a conversation. Between generations, the V6 Shift is the current mainstream choice; a used V5 Shift does the same job for less, with slightly weaker sealing.
Your course has real elevation
Slope earns its keep here, and the Pro XE goes further than the rest by folding temperature and barometric pressure into the compensated number. On a flat course that maths is a rounding error, so do not pay for it twice.
You keep knocking the switch on
The Pro X3 is the only Bushnell that solves this, because the switch locks. It is a small problem and an expensive fix, so be honest about whether it is actually your problem.
You want the cheapest Bushnell that is still a Bushnell
The A1 Slope is the compact budget model, listed by retailers around $270–300. The catch is the Mode-button slope: fine for social golf, awkward if you are ever asked to prove the device is not measuring elevation.
You already own an older one and it stopped working
Try the ten-second fix first — pull the CR2 for ten seconds and refit it with a fresh cell. That clears most stuck states across the range. If it does not, read repair and warranty before you buy a replacement: Bushnell’s support pages set out a limited warranty on laser rangefinders and a replace-rather-than-repair policy, so a unit still in warranty may be worth more to you than a new one. Retailer listings and Google’s own summary put the current range roughly like this. Treat the figures as indicative — Bushnell pricing moves a long way between seasons, and November is where the deepest cuts land.

Spares: the CR2 rule and its one exception
Every Bushnell golf laser in the table takes a CR2 3V lithium cell — except the older Pro X7, which takes a CR123A. Ordering the wrong cell for an X7 is the most common spares mistake on this brand. The Phantom is a GPS handheld and charges over a cable; there is no user-replaceable cell in it at all.
The other part people need is the battery cap, because it is small, black and easy to lose in long grass. Bushnell sells one cap that fits the Tour V7, V6 and V5, so a listing naming a newer model is not the wrong part.

Buying an older Bushnell
Discontinued does not mean unsupported. The V5 and V4 still have manufacturer support pages, spares are still sold for parts of the range, and the optics have not aged the way the electronics in a cheap unit do. What you give up is sealing on the older Tour bodies and, eventually, parts availability.
- Confirm Shift or not. Ask for a photograph of the side of the body.
- Ask the seller to range something past 150 yards and send the reading.
- Check the battery cap is present — it is the part that goes missing.
- Look through it if you can. Internal fogging and fungus are what cannot be fixed cheaply.
- Check what remains of the warranty, given the replace-rather-than-repair policy.

What is the best Bushnell rangefinder for the money?
For most golfers the Tour V6 Shift: it has the visible slope switch, the BITE magnet and current sealing at roughly half the price of the Pro line. If you never play competitively and want the cheapest Bushnell, the A1 Slope is the compact budget option. If elevation genuinely moves your yardages, the Pro XE is the one that compensates for temperature and pressure too.
How do I choose the right Bushnell rangefinder?
Answer three questions in order. Do you need slope you can switch off in competition — if yes, buy a Shift model. Does your switch need to lock so it cannot drift in the bag — if yes, that is the Pro X3. Do you play in conditions where sealing and optics matter — if yes, the Pro line, otherwise the Tour line.
What is the difference between Bushnell Tour and Pro models?
The Tour line is the mainstream one, 6x optics, plastic-bodied, currently up to the V7 Shift. The Pro line is premium: 7x optics, IPX7 sealing, metal housing, and extra compensation — barometric and temperature on the Pro XE, a locking slope switch on the Pro X3.
Does a Bushnell Tour V6 have slope?
Only the V6 Shift does. The plain Tour V6 has no Slope-Switch and no slope function, and it cannot be added afterwards. The same applies to the V4 and V4 Shift.
What is the difference between the Bushnell V5 and V6?
The V6 is the current model and is better sealed; the V5 is discontinued and is rated for light mist rather than proper weather. Both are 6x and both take a CR2. For most buyers a used V5 Shift beats a new plain V6, because slope is the thing you cannot add later.
What battery does a Bushnell rangefinder take?
A CR2 3-volt lithium cell on every golf laser in the range, with one exception: the older Pro X7 takes a CR123A. The Phantom is a GPS handheld with a built-in rechargeable battery.
Can a Bushnell rangefinder be repaired?
Bushnell’s own support pages set out a limited warranty on laser rangefinders and a replace-rather-than-repair approach, with the usual exclusions for drops, water damage and DIY attempts. In practice that means an in-warranty unit is worth claiming on, and an out-of-warranty one is usually replaced rather than fixed.
Are Bushnell rangefinders worth it?
Against budget marketplace brands the difference is not accuracy on a clear day — it is acquisition speed in poor light, documentation, spares you can actually buy, and resale value. Whether that is worth two to five times the money depends on how often you play and how long you keep things.
